Overview

This 4-day small-group Southern Italy tour from Rome combines coastal scenery, historic landmarks and some of the country’s best-known destinations along the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast. The route includes Naples, Pompeii, Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Caserta.

You’ll walk through the ruins of Pompeii, travel along the cliffside roads of the Amalfi Coast and visit places like Positano, Amalfi Town and Capri Island. The tour also includes Mount Vesuvius, the volcanic backdrop to the Bay of Naples, and the Royal Palace of Caserta, one of Italy’s largest royal residences.

Travelling in a small group with a driver-guide means less time spent organising transport and more flexibility to enjoy each stop along the route.

This tour connects coastal towns, Roman ruins and historic landmarks across Southern Italy:

Rome → Naples → Mount Vesuvius → Pompeii → Sorrento → Capri → Amalfi Coast → Positano → Amalfi → Caserta → Tivoli → Rome

Day 1 :
Rome → Naples → Mount Vesuvius → Pompeii → Sorrento (300 km)

  • Morning pickup in Rome and travel south to Naples, known for its food culture and historic centre
  • Visit landmarks such as Castel dell’Ovo and Galleria Umberto I
  • Continue to Mount Vesuvius, Europe’s only active mainland volcano
  • Optional hike to the crater viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Naples
  • Travel onward to Pompeii Archaeological Park, preserved after the eruption of AD 79
  • Explore Roman streets, bathhouses, temples and public buildings before continuing to Sorrento
  • Optional activities: Pompeii guided visit, Mount Vesuvius crater walk
  • Overnight: Sorrento

Sorrento → Capri Island → Blue Grotto → Sorrento (45 km)

  • Morning in Sorrento, overlooking the Bay of Naples
  • Optional ferry to Capri Island, known for dramatic cliffs and luxury villas
  • Visit the Blue Grotto, famous for its glowing blue seawater inside the sea cave
  • Explore Capri town or Anacapri, with optional chairlift access to Mount Solaro
  • Return to Sorrento in the evening
  • Optional activities: Capri ferry, Blue Grotto boat ride, Mount Solaro chairlift
  • Overnight: Sorrento

Sorrento → Amalfi Coast → Positano → Amalfi Coast (65 km)

  • Travel along the Amalfi Coast, known for cliffside roads and Mediterranean scenery
  • Stop in Positano, famous for pastel-coloured houses overlooking the coastline
  • Walk through the town centre and seaside areas
  • Continue to Amalfi Town, once an important maritime republic
  • Visit the Cathedral of Saint Andrew and explore the old town streets and waterfront promenade
  • Optional activities: Amalfi paper museum, Cloister of Paradise
  • Overnight: Amalfi Town

Day 4 :
Amalfi Coast → Caserta → Tivoli → Rome (310 km)

  • Depart the Amalfi Coast and travel to Caserta
  • Visit the Royal Palace of Caserta, one of Europe’s largest royal palaces
  • Continue to Tivoli, known for Villa d’Este and its Renaissance gardens
  • Explore the gardens, fountains and terraces overlooking the surrounding landscape
  • Return to Rome, arriving in the early evening
  • Tour ends
